Hi, we are Jeff and Stephanie, the dynamic duo behind MOD CITY LLC. Our story began
with a flicker—a single candle flame that ignited not just wax, but dreams.
We’d been talking about starting our own business for a while. We just hadn’t
found that one big thing that we were passionate enough about to invest blood,
sweat, tears and dollars. Then one day, Jeff found it. Something in his brain
just clicked…CANDLES! We love lighting candles in our home to set the mood with
amazing scents and a cozy vibe. But what would be our niche? That thing that
would set us apart from the thousands and thousands of candles on the market?
And then that hit us too. A lot of candles on the market are very country-esk
or crafty in nature. Lots of bubble-topped jar candles with pictures of pumpkin
patches and floral motifs. Nothing wrong with any of that. They just don’t fit
into the modern, simple and classic feeling we are trying to imbibe in our
home. Room by room, we are taking our design to a minimalist and sophisticated
brand. From there, Mod City, LLC was born. We created the first offering, Mod
City Candles, to blend seamlessly into that lifestyle. 

 

The Makers

Jeff:
The CFO-turned-part-time candlemaker. With a penchant for clean lines and
minimalist aesthetics, Jeff brings structure to the couple’s creations and “the
books”. He is the financial mind behind building the company in addition to
lending his eye for modernity and nose for the perfect blend of scents. His
dedication to the craft is evident in his hours of tireless tinkering to find
the perfect wick, scent load and wax blend. He demonstrates careful execution
with every hand-poured candle. 

Stephanie:
The HR Leader and part-time artist. Stephanie has always had a love for the
creative, but not much of an opportunity to dabble. Mod City has evoked a side
of fun and artistry she had not yet explored. Now responsible for the branding
and social media side of the business, Stephanie’s newly found TikTok channel
and on-line designs are infusing MOD CITY with vibrancy. She also takes part in
the creation and testing of all the candles with Jeff to ensure a permeation of
classic sophistication, sensual undertones and modern eclectic vibes.

The kids:
Alex & Sam: Perhaps the most unwitting participants at first.
However, both the kids really got behind the concept and wanted to be a part of
the action. Sam is using this as a real-life case study to apply to her
business degree studies in college. She also has an interest in engineering and
brings her penchant for putting things together into her candle-making. Alex
has always liked to work with his hands. After he finishes his senior year of
high school this spring, he will be enrolling in trade school. He has been
surprisingly into the process of candle making considering he is a 17-year-old!
But he is there willing to do every job from sticking wicks in the jars to
pouring the wax.
